About Us

Aspiring Hearts Counseling is a fully licensed and LCMHC Board approved mental health agency, providing outpatient mental health counseling.

All therapists are experienced mental health professionals holding at least a Masters Degree in a counseling related field and are licensed and in good standing with at least one of the counseling related licensure boards in North Carolina. Aspiring Hearts Counseling puts the individuals we work with first and attempts to meet the needs of those individuals while maintaining high professional and ethical standards. Aspiring Hearts Counseling provides confidential, non-judgmental, compassionate services to help all clients feel safe and not judged in their life circumstances. Aspiring Hearts Counseling follows the guidelines and ethical standards of the American Counseling Association.

During individual therapy, you or your child will meet one on one with a licensed therapist. Goals for treatment will be established with you and the focus of the sessions will be working to meet the established goals. Your therapist will utilize a variety of therapeutic interventions during the session, such as: talking, art activities, music activities, therapeutic games, mindfulness exercises, or other therapeutic interventions. These interventions will be used to assist you or your child in a variety of ways, such as: increasing self-awareness, improving self-esteem, skill building, learning coping skills, changing behaviors, gaining resources, improving sense of well-being, etc. The therapist will use interventions based on an established therapeutic approach, such as: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Play Therapy, Reality Therapy, or various other therapeutic approaches. You may talk with the therapist about the various therapeutic approaches and interventions, what approaches and interventions the therapist uses in session, as well as request a particular therapeutic approach.

During relationship counseling, all individuals involved will meet with a licensed therapist at the same time. Goals for treatment will be established with the individuals with an emphasis on the relationship. While in session, your therapist will use a variety of therapeutic interventions from established therapeutic approaches, such as the Gottman method, that are designed to work on the relationship. Therapy can help in several ways, such as: increasing awareness within self and the relationship, learning about communication and how to communicate better, learning to express feelings and needs appropriately, learning to compromise within the relationship, improving emotional and sexual intimacy, etc. (Insurance benefits are not accepted for this service.)

Trauma Counseling is a specialized form of individual therapy for those who have experienced a traumatic event such as: rape, assault, abuse, a debilitating injury, witnessing a horrific event, or any event that causes an intense emotional or behavioral response. A licensed therapist will use appropriate therapeutic interventions to assist the adult or child in learning skills to overcome post-traumatic stress and move forward from the trauma. Aspiring Hearts Counseling also has therapists certified in Trauma Focused – CBT (TF-CBT), which is a specialized evidenced based trauma treatment that is highly effective for children and adolescents. Additionally, the therapist can perform a Clinical Trauma Assessment. (Please note that some insurance policies do not cover Trauma Assessments and/or some specialized trauma treatment. Your therapist can assist you in understanding your options.)

Grief Counseling is a specialized form of individual therapy for those who have experienced a significant loss such as: a significant death of a person or pet, divorce, separation, break-up, or other significant loss. A licensed therapist will use a variety of therapeutic interventions to assist the individual in learning coping skills and learning to move forward with his/her/their own life.

Autism and Developmental Disability Counseling is designed to work with an individual diagnosed with a developmental disability such as Autism or Asperger’s Syndrome and/or the family of the individual. The focus of this therapy is to assist the individual or family in coping with the challenges of the disability, learning skills to overcome challenges, and improve the overall quality of life for the individual and the individual’s family.

Parenting Skills Enhancement is a type of individual coundeling designed to help any parent be more effective and reduce parenting stress. Parents will work to develop a clear parenting philosophy and improve on using positive parenting strategies that can be used to address a variety of child-raising challenges and problems. This service helps parents learn how to use strategies tailored to their unique circumstances that will improve behaviors, reduce arguing and yelling, and help develop better relationships.

LGBTQ+ Counseling is a form of individual counseling to address LGBTQ issues in a sensitive and non-judgemental environment. We have therapists experienced in working with Transgender and other LGBTQ+ issues including: questioning sexuality or gender identity, coming out, family issues, hate crimes, discrimination, HRT, relationships, gender expression, and more. Polyamory and Open-Relationship Counseling helps individuals or relationships address issues related to polyamory or open relationships with a sex-positive therapist in a supportive and non-judgemental environment. Contact us for more information.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a form of individual therapy in which the therapist uses interventions that focus on solutions and not on problems. This form of therapy tends to be shorter and tends to focus on one particular issue. Talk to your therapist to see if this type of therapy might be helpful for you.

Play Therapy is a form of individual therapy especially used with children and has been proven in research to be effective. The therapist will use a variety of play based items and experiences for therapeutic interventions, such as: toys, games, art supplies, stuffed animals, puppets, and other items. The language of play will be used help the child communicate, learn skills, and express feelings. Research has shown that the language skills of children are not as advanced as their thoughts. A child may be experiencing emotional problems but usually has difficulty putting those feelings into words to express what is going on internally. Children express themselves through their play and communicate their feelings through their play as if play is their own language. Play is our first language and without it, the thoughts and feelings of the child might otherwise remain hidden. Therapist who are trained in play therapy act as interpreters of the language of play, and use play to help address the needs and emotional issues the child is experiencing.

Career Counseling Whether you are trying to find a job or find a new career, career counseling can be helpful. This type of individual counseling will focus on determining the job or career that is right for you. A therapist can be helpful in learning skills for finding and obtaining a job as well as linking you with community resources.

Problematic Sexual Behavior in Youth Assessments and Treatment are specialized services for children and adolescents that have engaged in problematic or illegal sexual behavior. These services are delivered by a specially trained therapist. Problematic Sexual Behavior Assessments are in-depth specialized assessments which are more thorough than Comprhensive Clinical Assessments and determine treatment recommendations. We also provide Problematic Sexual Behavior - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (PSB-CBT) which is an evidenced based treatment model for youth that have engaged in problematic sexual behavior. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy is an effective therapy that incorporates mindfulness practices with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Contact us for more information.

Comprehensive Clinical Assessments are mental health assessments that examines most life domains of an individual to determine a possible clinical diagnosis and/or clinical recommendation of services and supports. Comprehensive Clinical Assessments may be useful in a variety of ways. Please note that Comprehensive Clinical Assessments are not psychological assessments which involve psychological testing.

Telehealth Counseling is any counseling service provided over the internet instead of in-person. Telehealth services can be provided to anyone residing anywhere in North Carolina with a computer, tablet, or smartphone (Camera, Microphone, Video Screen, and internet connection required on the device). The telehealth software is secure and confidential and similar to making a video call like FaceTime or Zoom. Most insurance polies are now covering Telehealth services; however, some insurance policies do not cover telehealth sevices or have limited coverage. We can assist you in determining your benefits.
